WHITE

Cuvée de Richard Blanc, Vin de Pays du Comté Tolosan, France 2005                              £6.84

A well-balanced white with clean, fresh fruit on the palate and a zesty finish.

Martin Isark, Scotland on Sunday

A clean thirst-quencher.  Ugni Blanc and the Colombard are not the most flavoursome grapes in the world, but temperature-controlled winemaking enables the producer to make a simple wine that hits the spot.

Saturday Times J MacQuitty 16/06/2001Top 100

“At Christmas, the brilliant Domaine de Richard red stormed off Majestic’s shelves and now it is joined by its white sister.... this juicy French white, made from a popular Gascon mix ...... is so mouth-wateringly fruity and delicious, I doubt there will be complaints. Heaving with ripe apricot fruit and the necessary zesty bite of a young French white, ..... star cheap French white wine turn. Fantastic value for money.”

Jane McQuitty’s Top 100 Summer Wines, The Times July 2002.

“I make no apologies for repeating my Cuvée de Richard dry white recommendation two summers in a row. This is the everyday house wine that I and everyone else would be happy to tuck under the stairs, bring to the table and pull out the cork without fuss, as and when required. There is sense in my repeating this one,... upgraded from humble vin de table on the French government-approved appellation controlée quality scale to a fully fledged vin de pays.... still comes from the same canny wine team trained by the Foncalieu co-operative....as it remains a vibrant, grapey, easygoing white with lots of mouth-wateringly delicious, zesty celery-spiked fruit on the palate.”

This classic Australian Chardonnay offers fresh ripe fruit characters, with a soft yet flavoursome butterscotch finish.  A really bright and pure, comforting dry white that's surely the best cheap Australian Chardonnay on the market.

Saturday Times Jane MacQuitty 09/06/2001

“This terrific new Aussie chardonnay was one of the goodies at Majestic's spring tasting.

Thirsty Aussie white fans, including myself, have had a long wait for its arrival but its seductive,

Orange blossom with a hint of pineapple on the nose, full-bodied, refreshing and persistent on the palate, with aromas of ripe apricots and peaches.

Andrew Catchpole, Saturday Telegraph

Viognier is fast becoming more popular than Chardonnay in bars and restaurants, and this tasty Argentine example suggests   why. It has a soothing peach, apricot and cream character, with bags of dry fleshy fruit and a gentle hint of spice.

Bethany Riesling, Barossa Valley  Australia  2004/05                                                                     £8.99

Christine Austin, Yorkshire Post

So deep in colour this one looks like it was left in the vat just a little bit too long, it is almost a red.  But what a juicy, fruit-packed wine this is!  Cherries, rapberries and citrus vie for attention, balanced by enough weight mid-palate so you can eat big flavoured food and still drink rose.

Oz Clarke, Oz Clarke's Wine Buying Guide 2004

Big solid chunky red with a fair dollop of fruit and a pleasing whiff of bayleaf.

Saturday Times J MacQuitty 18/11/2000 Top 100

“One sniff of this seductive 60% grenache, 30% carignan and 10% merlot vin de pays from the Aude department of the Languedoc and it won through as a Top 100 winner. This gorgeous, ridiculously cheap, traditionally vinified Aude red comes from the 80-hectare Domaine de Richard property, west of Beziers, owned by the head of the nearby Argeliers co-operative where this impressive wine is made. This earthy, cherry-stashed Languedoc red has extra oomph and flavour. Its full, sweet, briary, spice will go down well with winter and festive food.”

Kitty Johnson, Sunday Express, July 2002.

“Corking good value, this ripe, black cherry and plum wine buzzes with gentle spice. Grenache and Carignan grapes are ripened in the hot sun of the south of France, and the result is a delicious tipple.”

Giles Kime, Sunday Telegraph, July 2002.

“A very respectable Cuvée de Richard 2001, a rounded spicy wine from south-west France”

This Rich oaky Tempranillo reveals warm fruity flavours on the palate with heaps of vanilla and a smooth finish. If only most Rioja tasted this good.

Joanna Simon, Sunday Times

The label of this Spanish red is very tight-lipped about what’s in the bottle, but I can tell you that it’s 100% tempranillo, the grape of Rioja and most of Spain’s top reds. Because the grapes come from three different regions, it’s entitled only to the humble vino de mesa (table wine) designation and no vintage can be stated, but it has obviously been produced by a skilled hand. Aged in American oak, it has spicy vanilla and chocolate oak flavours, together with soft, honeyed fruit.

Rioja  Viña Asador, Spain  2005                                                                                                £6.99

Malcolm Gluck, Saturday Guardian

Has brilliant tannins, soft and creamy with attractively dry, dusky fruit of great charm.
